Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or if you have an employer, please ensure you add full contact details of your employer within your application. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

For those who are looking for an engineering position in the food manufacturing industry, an Apprenticeship is a hands-on work-based route.

We are the only college delivering this Standard in the South West of England. The course is approved by the National Skills Academy for Food & Drink. We have dedicated resources specific to the food and drink sector and all course content is contextualised within the sector.

Unitsof study may include:

  • Mechanical maintenance
  • Electrical maintenance
  • Welding
  • Machining
  • Materials
  • Fluid power
  • Automation
  • Maths
  • Thermodynamics
  • 18th Edition
  • Safety and behaviours such as HACCP

Learners will be expected to wear the following mandatory PPE/RPE in the BTC workshops when carrying out welding activities:

  • TIG/MMA welding gloves
  • Leather apron
  • Head mounted welding screens
  • Air fed welding screens (Loaned and available on a first come first served basis)
  • Safety glasses
  • Ear plugs
  • Safety boots
  • Proban overalls
  • A P3 Respiratory protection which protects against welding fumes.

PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.

There is an ‘End Point Assessment’ in the final year of the Apprenticeship.

Progression Options

Successful completion of this Apprenticeship can lead to a great career and could be the first step to becoming a Maintenance Manager, Engineering Manager or Factory Manager.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, basic communication skills and
the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You should also be self
motivated and have a strong desire to enhance practical skills and ability.
Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English is essential.

Attendance Requirements In the first year the majority of time will be spent attending college (up to 130 days) and ythe remainder in the workplace. This will give a broad base of new skills to take back to the workplace in years 2 and 3 when College attendance is one day per week.
